There are many different things to consider when starting a business. Usually the decisions you make at this stage will determine whether your goals and ideals will take flight or would end up down the drain. It would be important to make the right decisions at the right time and this goes true as well when it comes to hiring the right people for your start up business.

As a follow up to our article the week before last onLowering your Start Up cost, here are a few more tips in hiring for Start Ups!

The Right Time and Right Place

Knowing the proper time and place to hire for your business is crucial to your success. Recruiting people can be beneficial or can incur you unnecessary expense if not properly executed. Find out if you really need to hire people at this point or not. If you can make do without additional employees then don’t. Sometimes it’s better to do things yourself as much as you can. And if you do need to hire make sure you go through the right channels because you would want to find the right person that would benefit your business.

Choosing Who to Recruit

Another thing to consider is who you should be recruiting or hiring. You need to carefully think if you want to hire based on skill or talent.  There is really no right or wrong answer between talent and skill, it would be best to consider what your business needs at this point. Many would prefer talent though since skills can usually be acquired. Hiring based solely on your goals right now may not be a good idea since these goals will eventually change.  Consider this very carefully because the people or individual you would be making part of your business will either be an asset or liability in the long run.

Willingness and Experience

You may also need to establish if you want an expert or a person who can do general work. Since you are a start up, they must be willing to work in that kind of environment. Some people are not capable in working in such conditions and it would be unproductive getting these individuals and let them go in a couple of weeks due to poor performance. You will not only be wasting your time and theirs but also incurring cost that could have been avoided.  There are pros and cons if you want an expert or general individual. Experts usually are only able to do certain tasks but you are assured that this is done thoroughly. While a general person would be able to perform multiple task although you cannot really expect them to achieve the same level of output as an expert in the field.

There are many other things you need to figure out. Don’t be afraid to share ideas and goals with your potential employee. This will help you determine if they can help achieve these goals or not. Don’t be too hasty in making decisions.  Take time to interview people and make a list of who would be best to fill the position. Be willing to discuss and engage with your top candidates and make time to get to know them well.  Make the most out of your resources so you can find and attract the best person for the job.
