Putting the Bs (Becoming Better) in Boss and Turn into a Leader
Date Posted: January 20, 2012 - Small Business News & Trends

The first month of the year is nearing its end. Where are you with your resolution to become better at leading your team or business? 2 weeks have already passed for you to have made concrete action steps to realizing your goal at being a better boss. If the 2 weeks are not enough for you to be able to sit down and list specific action items, do not fret!  We share with you thoughts and ideas that will help you have a clear path towards becoming THE better boss that you’ve set yourself to be – A LEADER.There are three important key words that you need to bear in mind to accomplish this – YOU,THEM and US.

In order to lead and manage a team and a business, you need to take care of  YOU – Look into self –development; regularly polish your talents and skills by staying up to date on trends, tips, ideas, and information. Going to seminars, expos and having perfect practice also leads to development. Understanding yourself is the key in knowing your strengths and weaknesses, this will help you pick the best people to have in your team and knowing what to complement through the people you hire can lead to having an effective team.  Becoming a leader can be seen through THEM, the people you hire. You need to be able to hire the best of THEM all and possibly the one smarter than you! Taking care of your development and being able to put together a group of smart and talented pool will give you the opportunity to build a TEAM, business then becomes less of you alone but more of an US.  How exactly do you do that? Treat them as colleagues and be there to support their development and needs, see them as the person that they are and not just someone who gets the job done like a machine, communicate business goals, values and mission clearly then be able to hold them accountable towards these things when it comes to their performance. Holding your team accountable goes both ways, “praise in public and reprimand in private”. Now, by “both ways” we also mean holding yourself accountable.

Take note of these simple things but the one thing that will make your time worthwhile is when you commit to ACT on YOU, THEM and US. Why don’t you commit to have one focus action item per week and check back to see your progress? :)
